A mostly good news update.  I increased my virtual memory and now it plays fine in 2D, but still crashes in 3D.  I am pretty sure it is NOT gnubg-related because I am also having more genral issues with the fan kicking on.  I am good with 2D!

I struck out on all counts.

(1) there was no file named gnubgautorc in either the existing folder or in the new folder in the zip file I downloaded.

(2) When the game crashed using the existing game, there was no spike in memory or CPU usage either in the program itself or any other item in task manager.  Gnubg stayed right at about 35MB before and after the crash

(3) I downloaded zip file, and the new program crashed even quicker than the old program, and once again there was no change in CPU or memory.

Could you try to start gnubg with its default settings, by temporarily moving away or renaming the %HOMEPATH%\.gnubg\gnubgautorc file that should be present on your machine and see if this makes a difference ?

If it does, you could compare the file you put away with the new gnubgautorc the gnubg lauch above has created and see if something rings a bell, or attach both files to this bug report.

If the default settings didn't help, could you try to download the archive at http://files.gnubg.org/media/windows/gnubg-1.05.003-RC1-i686.zip , extract its content somewhere, run the gnubg.exe there and see if it helps ?

When the computer starts to "work hard" it may be useful to look what is happening in the Windows task manager: is the gnubg.exe process using 100% of a cpu ? more than that ?, is its memory usage quickly growing ?

One additional note - it happens in both 2D and 3D.

FYI, I have Windows 8, not 10.  intel i5 2.2Ghz and 8.0 RAM

For over a month, the game has started crashing at random times.  I have no issues with other programs, but when I begin playing I can hear my computer start to "work hard".  Either it is the fan kicking in, or something else moaning and groaning.  When the crash happens, the screen turns white except for info on the borders and I have to X out.  I have played the game for years with no issue.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times.  Any sage advice would be most appreciated!
