That makes more sense. However, there's more than one way of doing this.

Wget also supports reading from a user's netrc file. If we start mentioning everything in there, the section will quickly degenerate into a different topic. This is mentioned as a footnote.

I think could however add a note there asking the user to refer to se3ction 2.5 which contains more information about password handling. Maybe, if someone is willing, we can also have an entire section on password handling mechanisms and workarounds.

Sorry, I think I was not clear in my request.

I am not suggesting that --ask-password should be fully documented in section 2.1, just that there should be a cross-reference from section 2.1 to section 2.5. The reason is that currently section 2.1 gives the impression that the only options are either to supply the password in the URL, or to use 'wget -i -' and supply the password to stdin. In fact, this latter trick is not needed (at least, for interactive use); instead, --ask-password can be used.

Perhaps it would be good to mention --ask-password instead of the 'wget -i -' trick, for example?

Section 2.1 of the manual is the URL format. The --ask-password option does not concern the URL Format and hence it is not required to be mentioned there.

The --ask-password option has already been correctly documented in Section 2.5, Download Options.

Reading just that section suggests there's no way to supply a password other than in the URL.
