Is it recent change? Did it work before without font?

For grub-2.02~beta2, building for the 'coreboot' platform requires the 'grub-mkfont' configure option, and freetype dependencies.

I have a PC Engines apu1c which is a native coreboot platform, and features no video output facility - it is serial only.  It is somewhat inelegant to require grub's font components to be built for a system which can never make any use of them...
