Okay, I lowered the Priority to "later".  When Qscintilla has the required support, we can change Octave.

Its currently not implemented in qscintilla or scintilla, so needs to be implemented in qscintilla

Is the fix for this in upstream code with Qscintilla?  Can Octave do anything, or should this report be closed?

No, the octave lexer is used when it is available (since qscintilla 2.6 or so, not sure at the moment). When the snippet in comment #1 is changed such that the matlab lexer is used you see the default fonts from qscintilla and not the ones we have configured in the default settings file (there are no defaults for matlab). Obviously the lexer does not handle the ! correctly.

Geany is another editor based on scintilla and shows the same behavior.

how about !, the negation sign?
it seems the build is taking matlab's syntax highlighter,
see comment #1.
scitilla does offer octave separate from matlab:
<http://scintillanet.codeplex.com/wikipage?title=HowToSyntax>
finally, should this be split off as a separate bug report?

Its not currently implemented in the lexer and will need to be pushed up to the qscintilla project to get it implemented.

The matlab lexer shows the same behavior. It seems the %! case is missing in the lexers.

also "!" is ignored.

maybe it's caused by this:
c:\Octave\octave\libgui\src\m-editor\file-editor.cc:
#if defined (HAVE_QSCI_QSCILEXEROCTAVE_H)
#define HAVE_LEXER_OCTAVE
#include <Qsci/qscilexeroctave.h>
#elif defined (HAVE_QSCI_QSCILEXERMATLAB_H)
#define HAVE_LEXER_MATLAB
#include <Qsci/qscilexermatlab.h>
#endif

I'm using <http://www.openems.de/download/octave/octave-3.8.0.exe>
