Agreed, I think this was resolved with http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/b5d9b95d1e1a. The relevant pieces of the previous java.txi texinfo file were merged into external.txi, the "How to distinguish between Octave and Matlab" section was moved to bugs.txi, and the rest was discarded.

I think this issue might be CLOSED now.

When I have a look at the Octave manual in version 4.2.0:

  • The chapter "How to Distinguish Between Octave and Matlab" is now part of "Appendix D Known Causes of Trouble". This seems reasonable to me.
  • There is no FAQ chapter any more.
  • The Java chapter (A.4) does not have a list of TeX symbols any more.

I agree the section about distinguishing Octave and Matlab doesn't seem like it fits with the rest of the manual.

The rest of the "FAQ" sections could probably be worked better into the manual, rather than calling it a FAQ.

The list of TeX symbols seems really out of place in the Java section also, particularly since the dialog functions are implemented both in Java and in Qt now.

Retitling for the remaining issues.

I made the changes to the Octave manual suggested in comment #1 (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/42c3e30557a4).

Does the section about distinguishing Octave from Matlab even belong in the Octave manual or should it be moved to the FAQ?

In the Java section, there's mention of "37.3.1 How to distinguish between Octave and Matlab?"
This section isn't only relevant for Java; it's applicable in many other situations.

What would be a better place for this part of the docs?

Appendix D, D.3 Basics of generating a changeset, somewhere in the middle:
"Mercurial has a more useful extensions that really should be enabled"
=> (I think it should read:) =>
"Mercurial has a <b>few</b> more useful extensions that really should be enabled"

Appendix G.1.3:

- Isn't gl2ps needed since recently?

- In the Qt stanza, Qt WebKit is mentioned. IIRC that one was dropped a while ago?
