What specific version of GNUBG are you using? You can find out by going to Help/About gnubg/Build Info . The version is on the top line of the Buildinfo screen.

As an absolute beginner, I've only played the lower levels (Beginner to Intermediate) so far and I noticed in each of them erratic doubling cube decisions.

For an example, have a look at the fifth game in the attached .sgf file. I was only 4 pieces away from winning the game when GnuBG unexpectedly redoubled after roll #22.

Most likely there's something wrong with the noise generation that nobody noticed so far presumably because most players play GnuBG at full strength.
