I have just tried r2548 in Fedora 17. It works even with gfx.font_rendering.harfbuzz.scripts=-1.

Great!

Please go ahead and post any further problems that you think are appropriate to this report, so long as they have to do with Devanagari on Harfbuzz.

Sorry for comment #10, I forgot to run fc-cache. FreeSans now works even with the default value -1.

With freefont r. 2548 it is much worse, even FreeSerif ceased to work. Wrong characters are displayed. See the attached snapshot. I will try in Fedora 17 in my office.

I will try soon. What I wrote a few hours ago was tested in Fedora 17. Now I tried the same in Fedora 18 and I did not managed to make FreeSans work. rpm reports that I have harfbuzz-0.9.12-2 on Fedora 18 but in Fedora 17 rpm does not find harfbuzz at all. yum sees harfbuzz-0.6.0-5 in base fedora and harfbuzz-0.9.11-1 in updates. Thus I do not understand what's going on in Fedora 17.

Zdenek,  I just submitted some changes to Sans and SansBold that fixed the test file you gave me, but I have done no further tests with it.

I'll have a look in the tests I have at hand.  Could you do so as well, please?

About the magic settings... you might want to mention that to Johnathan.  These have been an absolute nightmare for me.  A little plain text up-to-date documentation (explaining the present state, and when things have changed) would go a long way toward aiding the rest of the community.

Firefox (or harfbuzz) certainly does not obey the shaping rules as defined in the document you pointed. Value -1 should mean everything but it apparently does not. I OR'ed the bits and tried values 127 and 255 and the result is wrong. All the values from 1 to 16 work. I tried other values as 24, 30, 31 and it works too. Value 32 should switch indic on but in such a case the result is wrong, similarly if I try 33 and 34. Value 95 should mean everything but indic but with this value rendering is correct. Thus it seems to me that interpretation of the "indic" bit is exactly opposite. FreeSerif works fine with any value.

OK, now I see it.

With the default setting of -1 of the gfx.font_rendering.harfbuzz.scripts, the ligatures misbehave.

Johanathan Kew explained to me some time ago what these values mean, they're defined in the JavaScript fiel: http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/modules/libpref/src/init/all.js

-1 (the default) means to use Harfbuzz; the only other meaningful value is now 7.

My guess is, I switched mine for testing some years ago (when Harbuzz was in rather early development), and never switched it back.

Thanks!

about:config attached. Changing gfx.font_rendering.harfbuzz.scripts to 1 (from -1) helped even without firefox result.

Hi Zdenek,

Attached find what I see in my Mozilla 20.0 running on Ubuntu 12.10.  I think the virama-ra ligatures are right.

Like you, I'm using a build from the latest SVN of FreeFont.
So what's the difference?

Could you point your browser to
    about:config
search for 'gfx' there, and send me a screenshot?

(In particular, my setting for
    gfs.font_rendering.harfbuzz.scripts
is set to 1.  Maybe a re-start is required for this setting to take effect.)

I need to know which OS, and which versions of the OS you are using.

I'm not very surprised Sans isn't working in modern environments.  Most of the effort in accommodating recent changes to font standards has been spent on Serif.

Zdenek Wagner wrote...

as Jonathan Kew suggested, I have installed his fontinfo plugin in
order to see why Devanagari does not work in gmail and facebook. I
have discovered that FreeSerif works but FreeSans not. All
"consonant+virama+ra" ligatures are wrong in FreeSans but correct in
FreeSerif. It was tested with svn revision 2525 and firefox 20.0.
Attached you will find the test file and my screenshot.
