I am tentatively marking this one WONTFIX. If a good case is made otherwise, we can revisit it.

Yes, I see your point, the problem will fix itself when a 64 bit build is available for windows.

To expand, if the 32-bit binary were reporting a 64-bit architecture, you might be confused why this binary cannot allocate more than 2 gigs of memory.

I'm not sure, I suppose we could make arch try to figure out what the OS is at runtime instead of at compile time, but then you would end up with slightly misleading results.

I think you would be happier getting a 64-bit build of Octave for Windows and recommending people using 64-bit Windows to install this instead.

Well, a 64-bit architecture is also a 32-bit architecture, isn't it? It can run 32-bit binaries.

The help text for computer states:

If the argument `"arch"' is specified, return a string indicating
the architecture of the computer on which Octave is running.

It does not do this. So either ther is a bug in the documentation and it should be modified, in which case it is still a bug as it is not compatible with matlab, or it should do this and it is a bug in the function.

But it's a 32-bit binary... It's not reporting the OS; it's reporting what kind of binary it is.

On my linux 64 bit machine computer('arch') returns

gnu-linux-x86_64

On windows 32 bit using the MSVC build it returns

mingw32-i686

On windows 64 bit using the MSVC build it also returns

mingw32-i686

Matlab returns for various systems
glnx86 - 32 bit linux
glnx64 - 64 bit linux
win32 - 32 bit windows
win64 - 64 bit windows

I don't really mind that it doesn't match ML, but it would be nice if it could detect the 64 bit windows environment vs 32 bit.
