This is fixed for me on the gui-release branch now with the following changeset:

http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/c6e5466d74fe

Thanks for testing and confirming.

I also forgot to mention that the graphics card I see this on is a hybrid Optimus setup (Intel built-in plus Nvidia). When I use the Intel graphics I see the dotted lines as originally reported. If I use the Nvidia card (using bumblebee / optirun) the lines appear solid as they should.

This issue also affects the current 3.7.7+ version of octave.

I'm using the intel driver on Ubuntu 12.04.3.

The plotted line and grid line becomes visible if its width is set to 1 (instead of 0.5).

I could not reproduce this error with a simple fltk program where is plotted a line of 0.5 width. The line appears in all cases as a solid line independently of the setting of GL_LINE_SMOOTH.

I asked this on the maintainers list first and the consensus was that this is not correct and it should be fixed to render the same on all graphics hardware.

FLTK plots on a Debian GNU/Linux system using the i965 Intel graphics driver appear as in this capture:

http://mailman.cae.wisc.edu/pipermail/octave-maintainers/attachments/20121012/a00a1866/attachment.png

All other systems I have tried show up as in this capture:

http://mailman.cae.wisc.edu/pipermail/octave-maintainers/attachments/20121012/a00a1866/attachment-0001.png

which I assume is the way they should appear.

An uninitialized antialiasing setting was proposed as the possible problem here.
