I also experienced trouble with the preinstalled libblas.dll not being compatible with my hardware, and experienced crashes.  I realize the default version (libblas.dll.OpenBLAS-v0.1.0-0-09f74f6_dynamicarch in my install) is supposed to do some autodetection, but it fails to detect the appropriate instruction set for my hardware (AMD E-350 APU).

While I was able to figure out what to do, I imagine most people who just try out octave and run into this problem will just give up, since the solution isn't obvious.  So, I'd like to help fix this problem, if possible!  Is there any information I can submit that would help someone else find the problem?  Or alternatively, if you have any pointers as to how I can begin to contribute to fixing this problem with autodetection myself, I'd be glad to look into it.

Switching to libblas.dll.atlas-3.8.4_ht-pentium solved the problem! When new related problem come up I'll submit them.

I suggest you'd better experiment with the various libblas.dll versions found in /bin. See the README which is in the octave-3.6.1-.......7z archive.

E.g., on my Windows boxes a simple

  demo plotyy

can reliably crash Octave, depending on which libblas.dll is in place.

(Admittedly this libblas.dll affair is a little sneaky.... the effects (crashes) can pop up in many unexpected situations. Sorry for that.)

The latest Octave-3.6.1 MinGW version (dated March 3, 2012) is much more stable, yet offers a few more libblas.dll versions to try (9) than the earlier 3.6.1 one (just 5 or so IIRC).

On my box your example works OK (I tried it several times) with MinGW Octave 3.6.1, both fltk & gnuplot.
On MSVC it works OK as well (gnuplot, fltk and qt).

I'll close this bug with a "Works for me".
It can always be reopened if you report that your example code crashes with all 9 (nine) libblas.dll versions in /bin in the latest octave-3.6.1-MinGW drop.

I can't reproduce this either... I even ran with valgrind looking for possible sources of error and found none.

My other windows machine also repreduces this bug on second run of the code. It's unclear to my why it did run without segmentation fault the first time.
By the way: I used the MINGW version and not the visual studio version.

I'm marking the bug title with Windows to make this more specific.  Octave operates correctly on the sample code in a Linux environment.

The following code generates a segmenation fault (both with fltk and gnuplot backend)

figure()
for m=1:16
  subplot(2,8,m)
  fplot(@sin,[-1 1])
end

The cause could probably be related to a strange size of the first graph in the subplot, see attatched figure.
