Just checked that such an option is not specified in POSIX (2004 or 2008) so scripts trying to be portable should not use it anyway and use the sh -c trick, for example. This is an argument for not implementing it and closing the report.

Well, it would save a few (normally 1) sh invocations, and would be somewhat easier to figure out and use. (The example you refer to only appears in findutils 4.4.0.). However, the trick/solution you propose is very good performance-wise compared to the use of the -I option. Thanks for the tip.

What advantage would this additional option offer over using the "sh -c" trick given in the EXAMPLES section of the GNU xargs manual page?

Hello,

I think, it is a pity, that the GNU version does not have option -J REPLACE-STR that does not imply -l 1 (like the BSD version, see, e.g.,
http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=xargs&apropos=0&sektion=1&manpath=OpenBSD+Current&arch=i386&format=html
)
Maybe, you could consider addind it.

Many thanks,
Gregory
