The CREDITS file explains that the Ethiopic range came from a TeX metafont, and that the spline contures were produced by TeXtrace.

The resulting glyphs have a lot of badly unnecessary points, and are also rather uneven and rough.

The results could be improved by a process similar to that used for Sinhala, converting the metafont objects directly to outlines.
