testing this with the version build on the new toolchain, PSPP is lightning fast. So this can be closed.

1 of the users reporting that the problem still exists wrote me that here PC is indeed not updated for 3 months. Most likely it will be updated soon. this could give us more information if it is indeed a MSWindows bug.

I too see the problem with the data disappearing when scrolling to the bottom of the sheet.

The users who reported this problem still have it.

At least one of them is on a network and has only partial control over their disk.

At the moment I think of 2 reasons:
1) John is right and the PC's in these networks are not updated yet
2) It has something to do with the very large files and the creation of the pspp<random name> directory on the root directory.

If I open the .sav file at MSWindows by clicking on the .sav file. Psppire is opened and the data visible. However if I go to the end of the file the cases are empty. If I then scroll up, all case are empty.

I somehow think a MSWindows bug in XP and 7 is a too easy reason. But as it came up and disappeared without any change at the PSPP site and the fact that there was not a problem on Wine I can´t think of another reason....

I will ask the original reporters if they can check again.

The suggestion to check the number of cases against the expected number of cases seems a good one in all circumstances. It should not cost much cpu power.

This suggests to me, that the root cause was, in fact, a windows bug which has recently been fixed by microsoft's automatic upgrades.

I think the best we can do therefore is to add a warning if the number of cases in a file appears to be less (or more!) than expected.

It is weird, but I can't reproduce it either. Even when using the same data and command and binary version!!!!

Sounds very unstable to me but have no idea why as this seems to happen on different computers.

Suddenly I can no longer reproduce this problem.

Using psppire.exe 0.7.8-g70add3 it works fine.  So far as I recall, that's the one I used before when I saw the problem, but I'm not too sure.

Can other people still trigger this problem, and if so, which version?

It seems this problem already arises if a large .sav file is read. See http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/pspp-users/2011-05/msg00046.html

It is not necessary but it is valuable, because it can help us to find bugs before they become visible to users.  I would appreciate it if you would start to run it again.  If there are problems, then we will try to fix them.

Thanks,

Ben.

No, I don't run it. In the past I had some problems with it and then stopped trying it.

It is necessary?

John Darrington suggested in IRC that we should make sure that PSPP reports an error if a casereader fails to return a case but it is known that one should be available.  PSPP is supposed to handle this case but it's possible something is wrong.

Harry, in your mingw builds, do you run the testsuite ("make check")?

Harry confirmed in email that setting the workspace to a large value avoids the problem.

Harry, how about another experiment?  Before opening the system file, run "set workspace=100000000." as syntax.  Does that avoid the problem?

Harry sent me the dissect-sysfile output that I asked for as a separate email attachment.

Unfortunately, it's identical to the output under GNU/Linux, so I have to think about other possible problems now.

I can´t run the program on MSWindows (XP or 7).

I placed the exe and its dll on http://sourceforge.net/projects/pspp4windows/files/Tooling/ so anybody can check.

If I run the program on Wine it is fine. But on MSWindows it crashes immediately.

If I try to run ¨dissect-sysfile" I get the error:
dissect-sysfile: FATAL: Couldn´t find dissect-sysfile.

If I try to run ¨dissect-sysfile.exe" the program ends immediately without any message.

So it exits even before it can check the number of parameters in the beginnen of the program.

Anybody an idea what this can be?

Harry, can you try an experiment for me?  PSPP builds a program called "dissect-sysfile".  Can you try running this program for me on Windows with the .sav file in question as the argument, and then send me the last 1000 lines or so of the output?  (The full output will be over 500 MB, but I am only interested in the last part.)

I don't need the output on GNU/Linux, since I've already got that right here.

Thanks,

Ben.

I figured out the proximate cause, if not the underlying one: PSPP is only reading the first 152521 cases of the .sav file.  I can reproduce the wrong results exactly by running "N OF CASES 152521" before FREQUENCIES.

I got a report from a MSWindows user about an error when using frequencies on a file in Italian. I can reproduce it. On MSWindows a lot of cases seems not to be processed.

On openSUSE i get the correct answer
On wine with the MSWindows binary I get the correct answer
On MSWindows7 I get the wrong answer

It depends not on a specific MSWindows build, It was already present in PSPP 0.7.6.

As the data file is much to big, I will send it to Ben.
