Yeah, I'm a dinosaur. :->

Anyway, I really doubt people like me need to be well-served in what we remember from the days of the 386.  Thanks again for the quick response.

I have no doubts that you used GRUB Legacy more then me ;)
Ok I even bothered now to try this actually out.
Strange that it really understands kernel=/x
The official manual at least tells nothing about this, according to grep '=' grub.texi

I think I've been using GRUB longer than you... this was the canonical way to specify arguments when VSTa first adopted GRUB.  Admittedly, that was a while ago.  Still, I hadn't guessed that you folks had not only switched to a different way of specifying arguments, but had also made the old syntax mean something new.  In any case, thanks for the quick response!

For an unknown command you get the error message unknown command.

>kernel= (hd0,1)/foo/bar/...

       ^
This isn't valid at all with GRUB Legecy
With GRUB 2 it's assigning a variable, so it's perfectly fine.

GRUB as installed in Ubuntu Karmic (1.97 beta 4), if you drop to command mode and enter an unknown command:

kernel= (hd0,1)/foo/bar/...

You just get another prompt, without any complaint about the command being unknown.
