With ca20b06, it is possible to turn mouse-tracking on using "mousetrack on" (and a corresponding 'defmousetrack'). This currently allows only switching to a region ('focus') on the screen by clicking.

Processing clicks on caption/hardstatus will require additional processing, something I plan to delegate to scripts, when that gets in.

Right; the terminal does that, so we won't need to do anything special to permit that. But the point is, it does interfere with usual operation, so should definitely be configurable.

In elinks (as least in my v0.11.1), to highlight text in a webpage, you have to hold the Shift key first, then you can click and drag. Without the Shift held down, mouse clicks are interpreted as interacting with the webpage, i.e. clicking on web links to follow, clicking on text areas to select, etc.

One downside would be that enabling this mode puts the terminal into mouse-mode (obviously), so you can't just click-and-drag to select text into the copy buffer (for middle-clicking in elsewhere).

I think it'd be useful to have the (virtual) hardstatus receive mouse events in terminals that support it, so that %w and %W items could invoke switching to the relevant windows.

Down the road, it might be useful to allow user-commands to be triggered from clicks in designated regions as well.

It'd also possibly be handy to support mouse-clicks for switching to specific panes in the layout.
