Great, thank you for investigating. For Gnash, we might want to warn the user if their gnomevfs installation happens to be the buggy one.

finally, the solution is known.

http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/gnome-vfs/trunk/modules/http-neon-method.c?r1=5465&r2=5464&pathrev=5465

for anyone facing this gnome-vfs-2.22.0 bug, you need to upgrade to the -svn version, or at least apply the patch from the above link.

so, this is a gnome-vfs-2.22.0 bug, and it's fixed in gnome-vfs-svn

On a second thought, I wonder if this issue applies to anything except Ubuntu.

We already knew that GnomeVFS was to blame. But "upgrade to Hardy" won't help much, especially if you don't use Ubuntu. So it would be nice to know how this was fixed in GnomeVFS.

I found something interesting from ubuntu,

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/totem/+bug/197669

"the issue was due to gnome-vfs changes and has been fixed in hardy now"

indeed, for GST_DEBUG=3, the only difference is still:

WARN           gnomevfssrc gstgnomevfssrc.c:841:gst_gnome_vfs_src_start:<gnash_uridownloader> error: Could not open vfs file "http://www.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=uinQhrKDAkU&t=OEgsToPDskJfnQ9rL2Ds6BS1VVaCUoFF" for reading: Access denied (16)

the previous pastebin is from gstreamer failure.

now, using GST_DEBUG=3, a successful movie playback:

good. I use GST_DEBUG=2

when it fails, I got:

Gnash will print the URL. You can make Gstreamer more verbose by setting the GST_DEBUG environment variable, e.g. GST_DEBUG=5.

I don't know how to get the url or what to feed it to.

I want to know how to make gstreamer more verbose.

I'm sorry, but I don't have a real solution to the "module gnash_uridownloader reported: Could not open resource". It only happens to some people and it seems to be unrelated to the Gstreamer version. But when it happens for those people, it happens reliably. If your uridownloader is actually gnomevfs (which it presumably is), try feeding the URL that Gnash sends uridownloader just before it gives an error and you'll see that it won't work.

I don't know what to do about this except to suggest that you try a different HTTP capable Gstreamer plugin. However, if you'd like to try debugging the issue, I'd be thrilled.

It helps to check the difference between broken and fine movies for me.

A movie plays smoothly here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gquVruoKEQ (good)

A movie hits the gstreamer bug:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uinQhrKDAkU (bad)

I chose those two movies, because they are from the same author within the same serial, so probably the difference is small.

Please ignore the sh: error. it's there because I still don't know how to make a simple testing script to start gnash -v:

#!/bin/bash

var=$(wget --quiet -O - "$1" | grep -F watch_fullscreen | cut -d \? -f 2 | cut -d \" -f1)
echo "var=${var}"
gnash -v -U http://www.youtube.com -P "flashvars=${var}" http://www.youtube.com/player2.swf

The error is there whether gnash plays or not. the real error stops gnash is "module gnash_uridownloader reported: Could not open resource"

The above means you're not running an up-to-date plugin.
The new plugin (I belive from 0.8.2 should be fine)
would invoke gnash with the -F option to specify a filedescriptor
to send GETURL requests to. WHen -F is not given, the urlopener
format is used (which is your case above).
With -F the plugin would handle GETURL requests, that would
honour javascript requests.

So, please make sure you did install the new plugin,
it takes an additional step (make install-plugins).
Also, make sure the new plugin is loaded and not the old.
