Based on RFM's comment this does not look like an issue that needs to be addressed.

I've now been able to duplicate this problem intermittently.  It looks to me like a keyboard focus issue of some sort ... at least, whether the menuitem key works or not seems to be related to which window I last clicked on.

Any update on this?
Did I misunderstand the bug report?
If not, is the problem specific to a particular version of the software and no longer present in the current code?
If this bug can't be confirmed, I guess it should be closed.

I cannot reproduce this, but perhaps I'm missing something.
Using GNUMail I tried ...

1. press alt-shift-k
The visual feedback was temporary highlighting of the 'Mailbox menu item'

2. click once on the mailbox item to raise the mailbox submenu, then press alt-shift-k
The visual feedback was temporary highlighting of the 'Compact' menu item.

3. I then tore off the submenu, and tried pressing alt-shift-k again
The visual feedback was temporary highlighting of the 'Compact' menu item.

This is with current svn code on debian/unstable/em64t and using the 'art' backend.

When a submenu is opened and you press a menu item key (say "ALT+SHIFT+K" for compacting a folder in GNUMail) nothing happens. You have to close the submenu first to use key shortcuts.

Not sure whether this is GUI or BACK related.
