We've moved to GRUB 2 as a development platform. Please can you check if this bug still applies there, and if it does, reopen it?

Thanks

I re-tried on another machine since the original is in use and the savedefaults does not work in the grub shell under linux while it worked during boot - but i cannot reproduce it with the original machine at the moment. If you don't have physical access to your machine i'd do a dry-run on a testmachine.

hmm...
I tried to reinstall grub with
grub-install /dev/hda

now, the 'grub-set-default' command works proper. But not the savedefault command in the grub-console.
You can type 'savedefault' at the grub-console while you are online with linux?

I mean:
$ grub
<loading...>

GNU GRUB  version 0.97  (640K lower / 3072K upper memory)

[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported.  For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions.  Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
   completions of a device/filename. ]

grub> savedefault <-enter

does this work for you?
I still have the same error. Unrecognized command :(

I got the "Error 27: Unrecognized command" too with 0.96. After installing 0.97 it was o.k. Try to remove the 0.96 grub completely and create a new mbr with a 0.97 grub-install. I'm not a grub developer but a grub user, so maybe you have hit another bug too.

although copying the file manually do not changed anything.
furthermore, the #12018 is about another error. I get:

-------------
GNU GRUB  version 0.97  (640K lower / 3072K upper memory)

[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported.  For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions.  Anywhere else TAB lists the possible
   completions of a device/filename. ]

grub> savedefault 1

Error 27: Unrecognized command
-------------

while in #12018 they're talking about some file-errors

what I want to do:
specifying a boot-entry for booting only the next time. For example: Just boot windows on next boot. After this, fall back to the default linux entry. AFAIK, lilo can do this with 'lilo -R <boot-entry>'. How does this work with grub since the savedefault command doesn't work?

Had the same problem with 0.96. Should be fixed in 0.97. See artifact #12018 .
Did you copy the stage files from your 0.97 to /boot/grub? "make install" does not copy these files (should be in documentation).

This error applies on version 0.97, 0.96 and other earlier versions. I don't know why this command isn't working, but the help of grub contains imformation about this command which let me think, that this command should work - but it don't work.

I tried ths following command sequences:

- savedefault
- savedefault 3
- savedefault --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 --default=3 --once

but ALL these commands produces the same error:
Error 27: Unrecognized command

Don't know whats wrong.
