Currently many graphical terminals are very limited in its capabilites if compared to terminal multiplexers. If features are introduced they often built on top of their own implementation. This leads to many programs reinventing screen like functionality. However this move is completely unnecessary if screen would provide a mere C API for other programs. This is not something only I imagined but was excessivly discussed on many forum threads and even got its own GNOME wiki entry [1]. Especially notable is the bug report which calls for such an API [2].
