The sound and soundsc functions have been removed from the audio package, won't be part of the next release, closing as fixed.

Same applies to the soundsc function.

The sound function is now implemented in Octave itself and will be part of the upcoming 4.0 release. I'm updating this bug to instead be about removing the sound function from the audio package so it does not override Octave's sound function.

Thanks for your bug report and patch. Unfortunately the audio package is largely unmaintained and has not seen a release in almost 5 years.

The good news is Octave will be gaining much improved audio support in a future version without the need of the audio package. Once that happens the audio package will not be needed any longer and will probably be removed from Octave Forge.

All that said, I can't confirm whether your patch works or not, or whether it's specific to Mac OS or not.

sound.m in audio package tries to deduce whether octave is being run locally from the DISPLAY variable.  In my system, this is prefixed with a path to a unix domain socket (DISPLAY=/tmp/launch-LwQmV8/org.macosforge.xquartz:0).  With the attached patch, sound.m understands absolute file system paths.
