Benjamin,

Please confirm

  • this does not happen with other fonts

  • that you don't have any other copies of FreeMono on your system.

  (locate FreeMono)

Also, you know, fontconfig maintains a cache of fonts.
After installing a font, you need to
   fc-cache -f font_dir_path
(this can get messy if fonts are installed in multiple places)

Hi Benjamin,

Regarding your screenshots:  I see it; it does indeed appear that the letter s (upper and lower case) is taken from the oblique style (or otherwise slanted).  I have no idea why this would happen.  I suspect a renderer has a glitch somewhere--there really isn't anything in the font that would do this.  I should also say... it seems vaguely familiar, like maybe something I saw years ago.  But that's all I have.

You should be aware that the actual rendering (of the font's glyph outlines as screen pixels) is done by some software layer, sometimes in the application, sometimes in a system library.  L/O has its own rendering layer; I don't think emacs does.  Part of the question then, is which rendering software is responsible.

You might try a bit of text directly rendered from a low-level renderer such as Pango or Harfbuzz.  ("pango-view" -- you might have to install a package to get that.)

It might be interesting to try the official release, just to see if something recent has happened to the font, or if there is a build problem (I doubt it, but...).  I strongly recommend that you use these rather than development versions, unless you have a specific reason.  The last official release is dated 20120503 at
    http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/freefont/

The OpenType (otf) builds are recommended for Linux; I find they look better under the modern renderers.  The TrueType builds are provided for Windows.

As to usage: FreeMono works better at larger sizes, and on higher-resolution screens.  Personally I use it on large monitors where I have enough real estate, but not on my netbook.

Hi Steve,

I attach a few screenshots. One with FreeMono.otf in LibreOffice, where I don't find the slanting effect on the "s"/"S". One of FreeMono.ttf in LibreOffice with the slanting effect, and one of FreeMono.ttf in Emacs with slanting effect.  (Unfortunately, FreeMono.otf doesn't seem to render well in Emacs, otherwise I could just switch to that.)

I cleared out all GNU/DNS ppa files, and grabbed the snapshot build and made the .ttf from it. I think I got them installed in the right place, but I haven't noticed any difference so far---though I'll have to test some more. So the GNU/DNS ppa may be a red herring. About the ppa repository -- it is here: https://launchpad.net/~dns/+archive/gnu . I just added this repository, and updated from there. But, as I said, I've got rid of the files from it for the moment.

I'm guessing it might be some rendering problem on my system...but it's odd, I didn't notice anything until a few days ago, and nothing significant has changed since then. I'll have to try to a full system reboot at some point, and see if that has any effect.

Hi Benjamin,

I do not see this effect in any version I have, including the latest.

Could you please provide a screenshot?

I have no idea what the "GNU/DNS ppa repository" is.  I see it, but I don't know why it is there, and why they are providing builds from the SVN repository.  These do not represent official releases of our software.

Could you send me a link to the exact page from which you downloaded the package?

You might also double-check that you don't have any other versions of FreeFont floating around in your system: try something like
    locate FreeMono

I could also try sending you a recent snapshot build.  Maybe something is wrong with the way this site is building the fonts.

Cheers!

As of recent versions of the fonts-freefont, the FreeMono font
roman typeface lowercase "s" and uppercase "S" both appear as per the italic typeface (in the ttf font).

I've seen this in the last few builds from the GNU/DNS ppa repository.

Version: 20121214-0gnu1~svn2477
Application: noted in Emacs 24.3.50.1 (confirmed in LibreOffice Writer Version 3.6.3.2 (Build ID: 58f22d5))
OS: Bodhi Linux 2 (built on Ubuntu 12.04)
