After some fiddling around, I have now realised that the bootstrap script is the one that creates the INSTALL file and the configure script.

I still think there should be some hint about this in the README file or somewhere easy to find, otherwise you are left wondering what to do after downloading the sources via git.

Thanks,
  Ruben

In the manual here:

  http://www.gnu.org/software/idutils/manual/idutils.html

section "2 Quick Start Procedure", it says "Type ./configure".

In the bundled README file it states:

See file `INSTALL' for compilation and installation instructions.

Neither is correct. Could you update the documentation to mention the bootstrap script?

Many thanks,
  Ruben
