This problem has been solved with the switch to the new procfs implementation by Jeremie Koenig.

Ironically `free' triggers a memory leak in `procfs', which uses
~0.5 megs more memory each time `free' is run.  Seeing one's memory
filling up on every `free' can be quite nerve wracking.
