As of 30 Aug 2013 the state of the TeX symbols is: 1. The Octave Table 15.1 contains 108 definitions. At least one (\0) is missing from the Table, but is implemented. The file libinterp/corefcn/oct-tex-symbols.in contains 103 entries including \0. \deg is not yet defined in Table 15.1. It is in the "basic control sequences in Appendix B of the TeX Manual. So, there seem to be 7 "missing" definitions in Table 15.1 (not counting \deg). This needs checking. And, it might be good to arrange oct-tex-symbols.in in alphabetical order by symbol name. There are 32 "common mathematical functions" defined in TeX including \deg. Most of these are trig functions which are just set in Roman type. But, there are a number, like \deg, which produce symbols. 2. Matlab's (R2009B) corresponding Table contains 98 entries, including \0. Thus there are 11 additional entries in the Octave Table. 3. The 11 Octave only entries are: \angle, \bigtriangledown, \diamond, \Downarrow, \Leftarrow, \Leftrightarrow, \notin, \prod, \Rightarrow, \Uparrow, \varphi. 4. The order of the entries in the Matlab Table and the Octave Table do not match. Neither is alphabetical. The order seems random. It would be good to decide on an order for the entries in the Octave Table. This will depend on what choices are made for additional entries. 5. The TeX Tables in Appendix F are in categories: 1. Lowercase Greek letters: 30 2. Uppercase Greek letters: 11 3. Calligraphic capitals: 27 (not to be included) (Given by ${\cal A}\ldots{\cal Z}$) 4. Miscellaneous symbols of type ord: 30 5. Digits: provides italic, bold and old. Not relevant for octave, I think? 6. "Large" operators (2 sizes): 14 7. Binary operators: 32 8. Relations: 33 9. Negated relations: 21 10. Arrows: 31 11. Openings: 5 12. Closings: 5 13. Punctuation. Not relevant, deals with spacing. 14. Alternate names: 13 15. Non-math symbols: 4 Total: 229 It is not certain that all of these have unicodes. There are at least 2 possible enhancements: 1. Reorder the Table 15.1 into TeX categories, and alphabetical within each category. Right now it is not easy to find a desired entry in the Table. 2. Do the reordering and include all of the TeX-defined symbols from Appendix F which are listed above. This would increase the number of entries from 108 to approximately 229. \deg and other special cases may increase this number slightly.
