I think this is invalid ... we can re-open if I've misunderstood.

I guess you/Matt had a minor communication problem/confusion on irc, probably confusing gdnc with gdomap.

gdnc is needed by all applications to handle distributed notifications, so it always needs to be launched if it is not already running (just like gpbs).

gdomap on the other hand, is needed as a name server for public connections (anything where your app might want to communicate with another user or with another machine) ... so if all you are doing is running applications which communicate solely with your own applications on the same host (probably most apps), you don't have to have gdomap running, and can set NSPortIsMessagePort to tell applications to use private connections instead.

NB. private connections are not implemented on windows .. so that still has the old behavior.

# defaults read |grep -i nsportismessage
NSGlobalDomain NSPortIsMessagePort YES

gpbs is running

openapp AClock -or-
openapp Terminal
... causes gdnc to be launched.  When asking on #gnustep, Matt Rice noted that applications that needs certain kinds of network access may indeed still want to launch gdnc, but generally with NSPortIsMessagePort set, most applications should not, and yet, gdnc is launching.
