when calling make with the --warn-undefined-variables, make may issue a warning for undefined special variables. Example:

#------ makefile -----

"make --warn-undefined-variables -f makefile" results in the warning

makefile:2: warning: undefined variable `MAKECMDGOALS'

whereas for "make --warn-undefined-variables -f makefile all" there is no such warning.

Suggestion: make should always define its special variables, even if they are empty.
