Dear Ana,

Greetings from Augsburg/Germany! Herzliche Grüße aus Augsburg!

Am I guessing right that you work for the US Department of Veterans Affairs? The budget request of your department for 2022 is $269.9 billion in total with $4.843 billion for "Information Technology Systems" and $2.663 billion for "Electronic Healthcare Record Modernization". Your IT department has a staff of 9154 full time employees. So there should be a sufficiently large number of skilled experts ready and in place to solve this problem!

The safest procedure to check if malicious viruses and/or spy ware is part of pspp is that you do a thorough code review of the pspp code available on the savannah git server, the libraries and build tools involved and then you build the pspp application from scratch.  You could ask your IT department for assistance. Maybe you can give us a short feedback if the bug is still visible with the latest code base.

I am not familiar with your relations with your colleagues in the US Department of Defence. Maybe your friends from the US Air Force in Ramstein/Germany can help you to download the Windows build from the build server in Augsburg? Closest to Augsburg is the US Army Garrison Bavaria with an installation in the nice Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Best regards

Fritz from Augsburg

Also, our IT was unable to get to the link for the download update; it’s blocked by the VA firewall.  They said the link goes to this URL:

  https://caeis.etech.fh-augsburg.de/downloads/windows/1.5.3-g797d4c/pspp-64bit-install.exe

(That’s in Germany which I don’t think VA security would allow)

Do you have any further organizations for how to install if the firewall won't allow downloads from this link?

The page at https://www.gnu.org/software/pspp/get.html links to PSPP downloads.

That is the organization I work for.  What is the latest version of PSPP, so I can request that?

I don't know what a VA is.  I would try the latest version of PSPP, since anything from 2020 is over a year old.

The VA is saying that I am using PSPP version 1.4.1 which is 2020, so that doesn't explain why this bug is showing up.  Do you have any further thoughts on this if indeed we are using a newer version where the bug should have been eliminated?

Thank you so much!

The box should be disregarded entirely. In the affected PSPP versions, it appears after each "." that is not preceded by a digit.

So when I'm interpreting output with this bug in it, does that mean that I should disregard anything in that square, or is that square a placeholder for a "0"?  For example, in the attached document under Model Summary, is R=.05, or R=.005?

I notice there are 4 "0"'s in the little box so wasn't sure if that stood for a "0" or whether to just disregard the box.  It makes a difference!

I wish my employer would upgrade, and will put in a request for this.

Thank you!

If this was produced by a version of PSPP from 2017, then this is a bug that's been fixed long ago.  The bug did not affect the correctness of the results, only the presentation.

If anyone is still using PSPP from 2017, please encourage them to upgrade.

Doesn't say version, just says created Wed March 1 2017; this was made available to me through VINCI computing platform at the VA.  Can I trust the output?  My syntax was:

REGRESSION
   /VARIABLES =
   /DEPENDENT =
   /METHOD=ENTER
   /STATISTICS=COEFF R ANOVA.

I also get the bug when I run an ANOVA or descriptvies.

It's a bug.

How can we make this bug appear?  What version of PSPP is this?

There is a strange square-like character in the output (as in the second row of the output attached, immediately preceding the 5%).  Is this a bug?  I was thinking this box could be a place value for another 0, but that’s very odd that the output is substituting that character.
