It is the command key in combination with wheel events that causes zooming or unzooming.  This is wanted and especially useful if you have a wheel mouse.  With the trackpad, the behaviour is a bit bumpy, because TeXmacs does not support all possible zoom factors (in order to reduce the memory footprints of the fonts).  Ideally speaking, the behavior could still be made a bit smoother under this constraint.  But it does not seem sufficiently important to spend much time on it.

Sorry for the confusion. For the second step what I actually mean is:

  • scroll down and then scroll up using two fingers on the trackpad

The following bug has been reproduced using TeXmacs 2.1.1 in both macOS 10.12.6 and 11.5:

  • open a new window
  • zoom and then zoom out using 2 fingers on the trackpad
  • remove fingers from trackpad
  • keep command key depressed for a few seconds

The last step (command key) triggers a progressive zoom-in.
