Zile's code is fundamentally affected by line ending support, for what is almost certainly a tiny minority of uses.

Reimplementing line ending support using conversion when loading/saving would simplify the code and improve editing efficiency. We would conversely lose speed when opening and writing large files with non-UNIX line endings, but Emacs too copes poorly with large files.

It would be possible also to use external programs to do character set conversion in future.
