Using perl threads fail on:

miros
openbsd
qnx
scosysv
solaris-x86
tru64
hpux

So there needs to be a no-thread alternative.

On Linux this function takes 100 ms. during startup.

This can be removed by starting it asap and reading the result back when the shell is really needed.

Need to check how long it takes to get to the code that needs the shell. If that is only a few ms in, then this will not make sense.
