Thanks for reporting back.  Good to hear that the visible cursor has improved things for you.

Thanks. I just tested it in the MSYS2 build of Nano version 3.2 on Windows 10 64-bit. The cursor is now displayed in the help buffer and I can follow the cursor to keep track of my position in the help buffer.

I also tested Nano with the JAWS screen reader. JAWS now tracks the cursor as you read through the help buffer. Thus this change did improve the accessibility of Nano.

Ah.  What you call "the caret" most people call "the cursor".  Your cursor apparently is a blinking underscore, mine is a non-blinking block (that inverts the character after the insertion point).

Okay.  I think it will be possible to show the cursor in the help text (extending the meaning of the --showcursor option), and to enable the <Left> and <Right> keys too so the cursor can be moved horizontally.  I will look at this in the coming weeks.

Nano implements the caret, just not when reading help.

When editing a document in Nano there is the horizontal blinking _ that shows the insertion point. This is called a caret. It is a target that one can look for helping them to see what line they are on. A screen reader will also look for that and when they use up or down arrow to navigate through a document it will read the line of text at the caret position.

I'm unsure what you mean by "the caret".  Is there any other program that implements this caret, and if so, how to enable it, so that I can see what you mean and how it is supposed to work?  Does Vim or Geany or Gedit implement this caret?

To improve accessibility of the Nano help, you should enable the caret in the Nano help text window. The caret helps someone who has low vision keep track of where they are in the document. In addition, the caret makes the text accessible to users of a screen reader since many screen readers will read the line of text at the caret location as you navigate through the text line by line.

Without the caret, a person who has low vision will have difficulty keeping track of where they are in the help text. I for one cannot read the help text because it is just one long text block and I quickly loose my place and experience eye strain.
