Alas, this is a known collection of issues.  There is already a bug report about linewidths (On screen measure is in pixels, printing width is in points), font substitution (shouldn't happen), alpha transparency of grid lines (completed and working on dev branch), etc.

OctConf 2018 is coming up in 3 weeks and one of the topics is going to be improving WYSIWYG plotting.

I'm marking this as a duplicate and closing it, but it is understood that this area of Octave needs improvement.

Well, it's certainly not WYSIWYG, but that is modus operandi for plot graphics (I've seen worse).  I would add the amount of whitespace around the left/right edges is excessive.  If you are running Windows, you probably don't have gnuplot, otherwise you could try

graphics_toolkit gnuplot

and see if that is better.  I think "graphics_toolkit fltk" uses the same output code as "qt".

Oops - left the list of differences unfinished: The line weights, the typeface, the line quality, and the colour of the grid. I've attached the myplot.png file.

The image on the left is what Octave saved from the plot on the right. The typeface has changed

I added the following to my code. A screenshot of the result is attached. It also does this fairly often.

print -dpng myplot.png

(I also decided to add a grid, so ignore that.)

What is the difference?  The weight of the lines and fonts?  Are you comparing the "Save as" from the viewer against, say,

print -dpng myplot.png

?

Plot was saved using File -> Save as from the figure viewer.

Have tried many times - same result.

(Apologies if this is a repeat. I think the previous attempt was eaten.)
