4.0.2 is deprecated and no longer supported.  I just verified on the development branch that the code works as intended.  Marking as fixed and closing report.

I just noticed that you have release "4.0.2"
This version is too old.
It works as I described with 4.2.1 (or current dev version).

Works for me.
You need to do in octave:

print("t1.pdf", "-dpdflatexstandalone")

and then at the shell prompt

pdflatex t1.tex

this is a good example
https://www.gnu.org/software/octave/doc/v4.2.0/Printing-and-Saving-Plots.html

text (0.65, 0.6175, ['$\displaystyle\leftarrow x = {2\over\sqrt{\pi}}'...
                     '\int_{0}^{x}e^{-t^2} dt = 0.6175$']);

cannot print to file while preserving \leftarrow.
