Unifont 10.0.06’s quo looks quite different from other fonts’ in that it has no right-side curl. Was that intended?

David,

This is in progress.

Johnny Weaver has told me that Cherokee teachers have told him that the serifs characteristic of Cherokee (short horizontal and vertical strokes) are important in a font when learning to read Cherokee.

I have been to the Cherokee Museum in Tahlequah, Oklahoma in the past. The last time was last year. When I am back there I will go over the latest glyphs with them in person for their feedback. If I happen to be near the Cherokee Nation on the East Coast I will seek their advice as well.

I don't want to strip away so much that the glyphs more closely resemble Helvetica than Sequoyah's script. I am trying to strike a balance between legibility of a low-resolution font and an approximation to the original. The next release will have lower-case glyphs more closely resembling upper-case glyphs. The initial Cherokee glyphs I created were closer to the original Cherokee script, but a lot less legible with such low resolution.

Thanks,

Paul Hardy

David,

I removed most but not all of the Cherokee serifs. People who can read Cherokee looked at the result and told me it was a lot clearer. I will re-examine the character heights but any further changes I'll want to run by people who are using Cherokee actively. I will probably make minimal changes to what is there now.

U+13A5 CHEROKEE LETTER V is shorter than the other capital letters.

The leftmost pixel of U+13C9 CHEROKEE LETTER QUO and U+AB99 CHEROKEE SMALL LETTER QUO looks like a serif. It should be lower to suggest the intended shape, a curl.

U+13F2 CHEROKEE LETTER YO and U+13FA CHEROKEE SMALL LETTER YO are too tall and their upper curves should be like that of tla.

U+AB91 CHEROKEE SMALL LETTER NE is backwards.

The right stroke of U+AB9A CHEROKEE SMALL LETTER QUU should curl above it, as it does in its capital form.

In general, Unifont’s Cherokee glyphs are inconsistent about whether they have serifs. Some glyphs, like mu, have some but not all of their serifs. Even some case pairs like da are inconsistent.
