David,

I have made these changes, setting the combining characters mentioned below to have an offset of -12.

Thanks,

Paul Hardy

U+A671 should have an offset of -8 (i.e. no change from the current release) and U+A672 should have an offset of -12.

Daivd,

I have incorporated your latest suggestions. I set the following combining marks to have an offset of -12: U+0488, U+0489, U+20DD..U+20E0, U+20E2..U+20E4, U+A670, U+A671.

Thanks,

Paul

U+2E45 INVERTED LOW KAVYKA is not low enough.

U+2E46 INVERTED LOW KAVYKA WITH KAVYKA ABOVE is not centered.

U+2E47 LOW KAVYKA and U+2E48 LOW KAVYKA WITH DOT are too low.

U+A67C COMBINING CYRILLIC KAVYKA and U+A67E CYRILLIC KAVYKA don’t look like the other kavykas.

I meant "tie a series of these together".

David,

My thinking was that someone could time a series of these digit indicators together, for example:

(space) (letter) (combining mark) (space) (letter) (combining mark) (space) etc.

That would allow typing a series of those combining marks, double-spaced, with a half-space appearing before the first mark and a half-space after the last mark--assuming that is how these combining characters are used. So having an offset of -12 and a width of 0 would accomplish that.

Would it be possible to use an offset of -12 pixels and an advance of 8 pixels to avoid the need for the following space? If not, your plan seems best.

Whatever you do about these marks could also benefit some of the other characters with General_Category=Me.

U+A671 is fine as it is: it is only 1 cell wide. I shouldn’t have listed it.

David,

On combining marks U+0488, U+0489, U+20DD, U+A670, U+A671, and U+A672, I think it would be best to assign an offset of -12 pixels. This will work if someone types a space, then a letter, then the combining mark, then another space. Then the combining mark would actually be centered around the letter. The complication is that someone would have to know to type those spaces; I could document that.

Any thoughts on this?

David,

Please send hex strings for Cyrillic changes. I will definitely not have time to work on this before the next release.

On combining marks U+0488, U+0489, U+20DD, U+A670, U+A671, and U+A672, I think it is a good idea to use an offset of -8 pixels (now that Unifont supports such fractional positioning of a combining mark), with a space typed before and after the base character. I'd say leave those glyphs as they are, and I will change their offsets in the next release and make a note about the new positioning.

Thank you,

Paul Hardy

The top left arm of letters based on the capital ka does not look like that of U+041A CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER KA: U+040C, U+049A, U+049C, U+049E, U+04A0, U+04C3.

The same is true of U+0416–0417 CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER ZHE and U+052A–052B CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER DZZHE and U+A684–A685 CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER ZHWE.

U+0427 and U+0447 CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER CHE and U+A692–A6923 CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER TCHE are too angular. They should look more like U+04F4–04F5 CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER CHE WITH DIAERESIS.

U+0461 CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER OMEGA should look more like U+047F CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER OT.

U+0484 COMBINING CYRILLIC PALATALIZATION is above the left side of the base character. It should go above the right side.

The enclosing marks U+0488, U+0489, U+20DD, U+A670, U+A671, and U+A672 obscure the glyph they combine with. I’m not sure if this is fixable. Perhaps enclosing glyphs’ combining.txt entries could be -8 instead of -16.

U+04B1 CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER STRAIGHT U WITH STROKE should look like a U+04AF CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER STRAIGHT U with a stroke.

U+04BF CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER ABKHASIAN CHE WITH DESCENDER should look lowercase.

U+04FA–04FB CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER GHE WITH STROKE AND HOOK should look like U+0492–0493 CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER GHE WITH STROKE.

U+0514–0515 CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER LHA have a serif at the upper left, which is inconsistent with the other el-based glyphs.

U+0526–0527 CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER SHHA WITH DESCENDER should look like U+04BA–04BB CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER SHHA.

U+2DFF COMBINING CYRILLIC LETTER IOTIFIED BIG YUS is missing the vertical iotification stroke.

The back yer part of U+A650–A651 CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER YERU WITH BACK YER should look like U+042A–042B CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER HARD SIGN.

U+A650 is one pixel too low.

The closed little yuses U+A658, U+A659, U+A65C, and U+A65D should be based on little yus, not on a.

U+A660–A661 CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER REVERSED TSE should not have a serif at the bottom right and should be 1 cell wide.

The serifs at the ends of the soft letters U+A662–A667 should be removed, for consistency with U+04A4 and because this is not a serif font.

The serifs on U+A692–A693 CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER TCHE should be removed.

The horizontal stroke of U+A652–A653 CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER IOTIFIED YAT and U+1C87 CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER TALL YAT has serifs. That of U+0462–0463 CYRILLIC CAPITAL/SMALL LETTER YAT has no serifs. The serifs of yat are sometimes exaggeratedly large so they are not inappropriate in a sans-serif font, but these glyphs should be consistent one way or the other.

The leftwards tick at the top of U+1C87 CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER TALL YAT should be removed.

U+2E43 DASH WITH LEFT UPTURN should be at the height of the other dashes.
