You can use the Jack audio server together with the Denemo's Jack backend (see audio settings) to work around that problem.

One thing that avoids Denemo stopping other audio programs outputting is to set the Audio backend preference in the Audio tab of the preferences to "None"
This disables Denemo from creating audio of course but allows other programs to use the audio while editing in Denemo.

This is something that bugs me too.
If I have Denemo running no other applications get access to the audio - VLC won't start playing a movie for example.
If something is using the audio. Denemo starts without any audio output available.
I have ALSA handling the output, not pulseaudio, IIUC.

I've tried to find a reference to this hogging of the output device in the PortAudio documentation (PortAudio is the backend that is used) but found nothing. Any help appreciated.

Denemo seems to suspend Pulseaudio, therefore other sounds cannot be played at the same time. Is there a way that an option could be added in the audio settings?
