How do the file names look like? Are there any special characters or spaces in the path or name?

This works for me. Can you try something besides 'xed' just to make sure it is not something specific with that editor?

I'm trying to set up an external editor for Octave 4.2.1

First, I choose "Edit" Menu, then go to the "Preferences", click on the "Editor" tab, check "Use external editor", and put

xed %f

in the "command line" field, but when I try to open a file from the File Browser, it opens several empty files instead.
