The varika is the glyph variant of the rafe used in Rashi script, a Hebrew font style historically used for Judeo-Spanish (a.k.a. Ladino or Judezmo). Its properties are the same as those of the rafe, except that whereas the rafe looks like a macron, the varika looks like a breve or a háček. They are both centered above letters.

Judeo-Spanish does not use vowel points or other combining characters.

http://s3.amazonaws.com/academia.edu.documents/35197356/A_guide_to_reading___writing_Judezmo.pdf?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAJ56TQJRTWSMTNPEA&Expires=1473775668&Signature=EKpQcBkT9ummzK6vfDz%2BQCOyJrc%3D&response-content-disposition=inline%3B%20filename%3DA_Guide_to_Reading_and_Writing_Judezmo.pdf is useful, especially the reading selections on page 16 ff. For example, some words with varika from the third reading selection are “איזﬞיקוס” and “בﬞוס”.

The varika typically appears in ⟨בﬞ⟩, ⟨גﬞ⟩, ⟨דﬞ⟩, ⟨זﬞ⟩, ⟨פﬞ⟩, and ⟨שﬞ⟩. Neither FreeSans nor FreeSerif places the varika correctly. I didn’t notice the problem in FreeSerif yesterday because it is subtler, but it is clearly off-center on the thin letters gimel and zayin.

And I don't understand the relation of this mark to other marks, such as vowel points.  Can both be present on one letter?

No attempt has been made to center this mark.

I have no idea what this mark does.  When I first worked on it, there was very little information to be found, and I haven't had the time lately.

It would be really helpful if you could provide Unicode taxt, and, ideally, and image of printed text (modern fonts are of less value than traditionally printed text).

Thanks!

The new FreeSans varika is off-center: compare ⟨פﬞ⟩ to ⟨פֿ⟩.

The characcter is now non-spacing.
Thanks, David!

In FreeMono and FreeSans, U+FB1E HEBREW POINT JUDEO-SPANISH VARIKA is spacing.
