the enhancement you propose is an enhancement, not a regression. it seems a nontrivial and confusing idea imho. certainly making up new cmdline syntax is not at all desirable.

it is true that arnold and i did not implement the actual texindex -o in the new awk texindex, because as far as i knew/know it had been used exactly zero times in all of texinfo's long history, and it had no useful purpose we could think of, either. it wouldn't help you with your .fl[s] woes anyway.

There is a regression of texindex in awk compared to the C program: the -o option is no longer supported.

BTW, it would be nice if -o would support multiple files like this:
