Version 4.2.1 is deprecated and no longer supported.  Please try with the latest stable release which is 5.1.0.  The problem is likely to have been fixed.

This is my first time using Octave. I seem to have encountered the same bug in 64bit Octave 4.2.1 on a 64bit Win7-Pro machine with an AMD Radeon HD7950 graphics card except at a larger command window size. I'm using a 4K monitor and when the command window X*Y pixel area count exceeds ~3,123,000, I get the bizarre/flashing characters. Both 1792*1743 and 2484*1257 are very close to the working limits in X,Y dimensions. Fresh info below...

Adjusting the history buffer size in Preferences|Settings|Terminal from default 1000 to 2000 makes no difference. Changing the font size from Courier_New 10pt to 12pt does make a difference. With 12pt, the new area working limit is 2484*1664 (4,133,376 pixels).
Best Regards,
Al

Does the size of the terminal buffer, which can be adjusted in the settings dialog, has any effect on the issue?

This bug appears to be related to window area and not just width.  If you make the command window short (vertically), then you can go very wide (horizontally) without this bug occurring.

First of all, congrats on releasing version 4!

Just started it and immediately came to this bug: On a high resolution screen, the command window will show random and  coloful symbols once it is scaled too wide (something around 2200 pixels).

When slowly enlarging the window beyong the critical size, first the text of multiple lines starts wrapping (getting dragged into the ends of the lines above) and then everything disappears into colorful memory garbage.

This affects the command window, but not editor. The bug can be "fixed" by scaling the command window to a smaller width by either resizing octave or the command window itself.
