@arvidjaar: You're right, I've checked it and grub-mkconfig output is on stderr.

grub-mkconfig and scripts that are included in grub sources output own messages to stderr. If it does not happen, it is a bug; please provide log of grub-mkconfig then.

To simulate a grub configuration file creation, I do:
grub-mkconfig -o /dev/null because grub-mkconfig write information messages AND configuration on standard output so it's only possible to catch informations without created configuration by creating a real file. By using /dev/null as configuration output, grub-mkconfig delete the device !

Note: if -o argurment is a directory, grub-mkconfig write the file in the directory and don't print an error too.

=> grub-mkconfig need to check if the output path is a real file in order to do not supress special files as character/block devices.

=> grub-mkconfig need to use stderr as output for informationnal messages
