I cannot reproduce your problem.  Probably you entered the verbatim code into an enumerate environment, in which case the numbering is usually what the user wants.

Suppose I have the following document:

    1. some text
    2. some text
      
        some verbatim code

When I press enter within some verbatim code, 3. is added, but doing so doesn't make much sense, and since code usually has many lines, it's a hindrance to press backspace every time.
