Hi Hsing-yen,

I finally put the glyph for U back to the original form, which came from the TemporaLGCUni fonts by Alexey Kryukov.

Thanks for your report!

Seen from this file:

I found there is a good sample for what does У looks like.

I found File:AlphabetiSerborum 1841.jpg (as comment #2 posted) is more closely to Times faces.

The glyph of У we have usually seen is based on a little squashed V and the tail of y, as comment #2 shown on. But in FreeSerif the glyph of У you have designed looks bias to right.

I think TITUS font also set an good example for some glphs in Cyrillic. This font was maintained by Thesaurus Indogermanischer Text- und Sprachmaterialien project, also deriving from the Times faces.

Hi Hsing-yen,

These are excellent examples, thank you.

On the other side, this change wasn't made lightly.  At the time, I had access to a library with a lot of older Russian texts, and I spent some hours comparing different types.  (I no longer have access to that library, and I don't know if I made photos... probably not.) I saw considerable variation in styles of Russian type, and at the time, I thought the change was justified.

I take your opinion seriously, too, and I'll consider this more.

Well, I found a image which is scanned from Srpske narodne pjesme , when I compare with it I found У in FreeSerif is obviously different from it, the ball on the tail looks not good-looking.

Another scanned image can also prove it.

In what respect is the glyph "ugly"?  This is simply the statement of an emotional reaction, and completely subjective.  Please state in exactly what way it strikes you as being wrong.

There were two small changes to Cyrillic U made.
As I recall, it was in response to another reporter, who felt it wasn't right the way it was in the 2012 release.  I can double-check.  But if it was indeed another user's opinion, you will need to make a much stronger argument.  For example you might show images of various printed documents. (Again, we are not interested in comparisons with modern computer fonts.)

The changes consist of:
1) bending the letter slightly to the left, for better balance.
2) making the ball on the tail a little heavier, again for balance.
I recall that without these, in many combinations the letter looked almost as if it were disconnected from its word, even after as much kerning as I could stand.

In any case, your opinion is important to us!

Hi Steve,

I found in the newest revision of FreeSerif, Cyrillic U looks not good-looking than 2012-05-03 release (as range sample shown on).
