The documentation string for rats is in libinterp/corefcn/pr-output.cc at line 3391.  Could you prepare a changeset to add a sentence on why and when an asterisk might be produced?

"rats(pi, 4)" gives "22/7" but "rats(pi, 3)" produces "*".  The documentation doesn't seem to mention that asterisks will be produced in some cases.  See #43367 for a discussion of what those cases should be.
