Oops now I cannot reproduce!  Strange, I don't think I'll changed anything and I tested it several times yesteryday.

# echo $LANG
en_US.UTF-8

I also just tested with a chinese input method without problem.

I have tested a build from the actual default branch (hg summary gives: parent 19056:4630a18757b3 tip). I was able to open the test file without problems.
What is your system's language setting?

I am on the gui-release branch and the crash does not occur. I will test this on the default branch tomorrow.
