Well, I came across a case where the stanza number is not at the start, so I have allowed it to go in at cursor position. In git now.

Hmm, yes that works in 1.18.0 too, I just added the # because it was in the docs for 1.18.0
I have a right click menu item working to insert the stanza number, it does so at the cursor position, but perhaps the stanza number can only be useful at the beginning? Please advise - it is easier to menu-click just anywhere in the lyrics pane than to click it at the beginning...
And is there anything else useful that could be inserted, to save having to remember the syntax (or even to let folk know the syntax exists!)

For me, it works without problems when leaving out the #, e.g.

\set stanza = "1. "
This is the text

I'm using Lilypond version 1.16, though.

Hmm, the spaces are important the error message was that stanza=#"1." was not a symbol, the = has to be separated by a space.
I'll keep this open for adding a feature to Denemo to insert the required syntax into the lyrics pane.

Actually, the display problem is fixed by putting
\set stanza = #"1. "
on a separate line. But Lilypond complains:

denemoprintB.ly:19:7: error: not a symbol
 \set
      stanza=#"1."

Hmm, I tried

\set stanza = #"1. " in the Denemo lyrics pane, it kills the underlay of the text in the Denemo display (which I can fix) but worse it generates the wrong LilyPond syntax for 2.18.0 at least.
The documentation only shows putting that in an \addlyrics {} clause, I can't see anything for the syntax Denemo uses (which is
\lyricmode {   }

anyone any ideas here?

You can use the lilypond synthax in the lyrics pane, e.g.
\set stanza = "1. "

If you put verse numbers in via "1. the" lyrics
then the 1. is aligned under the notes. If you add the numbers as textual annotation then you have to hand-adjust the position. There is stuff in LilyPond for handling verse numbers ...
