I have no quarrel with that.  I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page in understanding how we got here.  Strategically rewriting history is fine; inadvertently rewriting it less so.

Good to know!  I admit I miss a lot of -me detail because I use only a fraction of its functionality, and .tp isn't one of the macros I tend to use.

Ahhhhh.  Okay.  I totally overlooked this.

Heh.  Or maybe even me(7)linger...

I admit, you make a good case, but I don't want to encourage anybody to file 50 different tickets like this for Item Group "Lint", so I'm sticking a retrojective interpretation onto this ticket as essentially consisting of the content-related issue.

...and updating the Summary accordingly.

I admit I'm indulging a bit of a mallet swing vis à vis pegs and holes.

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention that you get `sp`'s troff semantics back on title pages created with me(7)'s `tp` request.  This is also now documented (for the forthcoming groff 1.23.0) in meref.me and groff_me(7).  (It has long been noted, casually, in meintro.me.)

"No longer applicable" because they'd already been applied, in the string of 50 commits from fb539489 to e1e920c7 (all visible on exactly one page of the log in the web interface: http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/groff.git/log/?ofs=3637).  Comment #3 mentioned this briefly but didn't provide detail.

The 51st of them, which dealt with content rather than just cosmetics, did malinger into the next release cycle, so yes, depending on what you're measuring, it's either a single -me patch, or a wide-ranging set of patches.

Sorry, not Item Groups, but Categories.  Savannah uses these terms in an unintuitive way for me--I would swap their application.

Well, maybe not 51--at most, a bit less than the number of Item Groups we have in Savannah.

In 2017, around comment #9 or comment #10, the scope of this ticket seems to have narrowed to the `me` package, because the submitter regarded the rest as no longer applicable.  Perhaps they were early victims of my documentation revision efforts.

In case someone was wondering why I went on this bug-classifying rampage, I want to gather statistics for the preparation of groff 1.23.0 release notes, as well as general intelligence on where our tickets seem to cluster.

I expect to create a `RELNOTES` file at the top of our source tree before too long which can be stitched together with NEWS to create a release announcement email for 1.23.0-rc2.

commit 7a83f7f5003e24f020306f09f4d497e04e82cb14

    Call out altered behavior of .sp in -me documents.

            * doc/meintro.me:
            * doc/meref.me:
            * doc/groff_me.7.man: Explain that .sp will not generate
            vertical space at the top of the page, and that .bl must be used
            if that behavior is desired.

            Based on a patch by Dave Kemper originally submitted in 2011(!);
            thanks to Dave for his reminders and Herculean patience.

            Fixes <https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/index.php?40967>.

            * doc/groff_me.7.man: Also stop using the .UC macro; this
            implementation of "me" is not {part of, maintained by} a
            Berkeley distribution.  A quick grep indicates that no other
            groff man pages are using .AT or .UC.

Hi Dave,

Yes--please file a new bug for the translation update.

With any luck we can get it folded into 1.22.4 final.

Thanks again for your patience with this issue.

Thanks for applying this.  I've emailed Grégoire about the translation.  Possibly this bug report should be left open as a reminder that that still should be added.  Alternately, I can open a new bug report for that, since this one covers a lot of ground and everything else here has been addressed.

I've reviewed the changes and they look fine.

I actually think it is all right to have the change to groff_me.7.man; a behavior change to a low-level request is surprising enough that it's worth calling out, in my view.

I'm doing a build now and A/Bing the affected output documents.

I've modified the patch again; it now only affects the files doc/meintro.me and doc/meref.me.  It no longer adds text to tmac/groff_me.7.man: this man page provides a terse high-level overview, and the level of detail my previous patch added was inappropriate for that.

If anyone applies this fourth version of this seven-year-old patch -- or gives feedback on what about it needs to be improved -- I'll contact the meintro_fr.me translator and ask him to translate the added text for that file.  (I considered contacting him preemptively to get a translation to add to the patch, but since this patch has been in limbo since I submitted the first version in 2011 [at which time doc/meintro_fr.me didn't exist], there's little point in getting a translation until someone reviews the English wording and accepts the patch.)

If you like ancient history, the patch originated by request from Werner Lemberg: http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/groff/2011-07/msg00033.html

Reassigning to self.  As Bjarni said, likely many of these have been fixed recently or rendered inapplicable.

But as I'm the cause of a lot of recent changes to in-tree documentation, and I didn't know this collection of fixes existed, I'm curious to review them and see if any stragglers are left behind.

Reassigning to self.

Are there problems with this patch that prevent its being applied to the git repository?

The last file in the list should read:

 t m a c / g r o f f _ w w w . m a n

(without the spaces).  For some reason, this software altered the file name by erroneously inserting an "http".

Fifty-one patches to groff's documentation have been posted to the bug-groff email list in October and November 2013, the vast majority of them by Bjarni Gislason.  The following list of messages contain documentation patches that have yet to be applied.

(Each entry includes a URL pointing to an archived copy of the message.  However, if possible, the original email message should be used rather than the web archive, as the archival software munges any email addresses anywhere in the message, which results in incorrect patch files when the code being patched contains an email address (or even just a string containing an @).  If the web archive is used, instances of "address@hidden" in patch files will have to be fixed by hand.)
