I agree this would be nice; I've often wanted it. Jordi, are you still working on it? If you have a draft, I'd be happy to take a pass.

On a related note, I like the fact that Octave displays scalars on the same line as the variable name, unlike Matlab. However, for matrices and vectors, why is there a blank line above and below the answer?

My preferred format would be for row vectors that fit in one line to be displayed on the same line as the variable name, and for less space in cases when multiple lines are needed.

I think you're right. And if people want the verbose, pretty-print version there is always celldisp().

It would be useful if output for cell arrays actually showed the array structure by compacting entries (e.g. "[10x10 double]" instead of showing the actual matrix). Possibly the same for structs, and possibly control switching between the current and this more compact output.
