I have a patch somewhere which progressively simplifies menu when screen is too small. Changing font is troublesome since menu rendering and terminal are different layers abstracted from each other. And similar problem may happen with other terminals as well.

The file upload didn't seem to work. I uploaded to another location:

http://www.file-upload.net/download-7570620/grub_config_tree.tar.gz.html

(please clock the small download button above "Tipp: Pic Upload!")

I installed the trunk. There's the same problem. Files are attached!

The 05_debian_theme is copied from ubuntu 13.04 (because it didn't exist). The other files are not modified.

I put 3 *.pf2 files into /boot/grub:

unicode.pf2 (font size 20): this one is too large and will corrupt the boot menu (currently used)
unicode.18.pf2: the absolute maximum font size. Menu seems a little bit damaged but still works
unicode.16.pf2: at this size the menu looks ok

Renaming such a file from unicode.*.pf2 to unicode.pf2 is enough to change the behavior.

Can you
1) Try bzr trunk

2) If trunk has problem as well, can you upload the config file, theme and fonts you use so the problem can be recreated?

After playing with custom fonts on the grub menu I've noticed that it doesn't load the boot menu and also doesn't respond to keyboard actions. The problem occurs when there's not enough space for rendering the boot menu using the given font.

Example:
Ubuntu 13.04 (12.04 is affected too, I didn't try other distributions)
Resolution: 640x480
Font: DejaVu Sans Book 18
Generated by: grub-mkfont --output='/boot/grub/unicode.pf2' --size='18' '/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-dejavu/DejaVuSans.ttf'

The problem is, that a user cannot try the chosen font without rebooting. However if the the grub menu doesn't load then, the user has to use a live cd to fix this.

I think this behavior should be changed so that it falls back to default font in this case.
