I added the mwSignedIndex type in this changeset (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/a23693fa5ba9). It will be available for the next release of Octave or you can build from the development sources.

mwSignedIndex is defined in the MATLAB API as a signed integer type (ptrdiff_t):
but is not yet defined in Octave.
This has already been mentioned here:
Could its definition be added in matrix.h to improve Octave compatibility with MATLAB?
